2024 Agenda
Our Issues
Protecting Social Security, Community Violence Prevention
Berrien Forward understands the severity of gun violence from homicides, mass-shootings, and rising rates of suicide; we know we have a storm of bad legislation, mental health issues, and expansive access to firearms that make those horrible incidents all the more common. We advocate expanded background checks, extreme risk and protection orders, higher scrutiny on gun manufacturers, expansion of publicly funded programs to address the socio-economic issues that underpin gun violence, and a new but scientific approach to dealing with chronic mental health disorders.Support Unions And Skill Trades
Here at Berrien Forward, we will always stand with our union brothers and sisters, because we know a paycheck is about dignity and self-esteem – and every working person in this country deserves the opportunity to join a union. Berrien Forward will continue strong partnerships with local, state, and national labor unions, locals, and labor leaders to ensure our public policy gives the average citizen a fighting chance.Enhancing Equitable Access to the Ballot
We believe that the strongest power in a democracy resides in the ballot. Equipping each resident with the information to make the most informed and reasoned decision is our core mission. State government should expand early voting and no reason for absentee voting; while, subsequently providing funding for municipalities and counties to implement these expansions. Municipalities – as much as possible – cement consistent polling locations, communications, and mail no-reason absentee ballot applications to residents with postage paid. Finally, we advocate for free and fair elections, where no politicians, special interest groups, or organizations can influence poll workers, clerks, or ballot tabulators for any purpose.Democracy
Berrien Forward is committed to protecting the institutions that founded the United States of America: a free and open society strengthened by dialogue, disagreement, and deliberation. With relentless assaults on our voting rights and securities, undermining local control, and civic participation – we will fight to ensure your right to have your voice heard!
Skilled Trades
Our brothers and sisters in unionized shops around the county, state, and country are fighting for competitive wages, contracts, and benefits – and we stand in solidarity. Berrien Forward will advocate for policies that strengthen local governments ability to negotiate contracts, bargaining strength for labor unions, and equipping local businesses with the workforce they need to thrive
Public Transportation
Residents of Berrien County deserve the ability to use public transportation to its highest capacity. From workforce development busing to economic development routes to create a web of commerce and business throughout Berrien County; we envision a world where transportation is a public good and everyone has access to it.
Reproductive Access
Only a woman and her doctor have the right to make decisions about her healthcare needs. Today, big government and restrictive policies are being championed across the United States by organizations and individuals that want to see women taken out of the conversation about their own health and autonomy. Berrien Forward not only resists all legislation to restrict a woman’s access to healthcare, we will fight any effort to take away years of precedent in the United States of America.
Advocating for
Collaborative Governance
Berrien Forward operates as a dynamic coalition of local, state, and federal partners, united by a profound understanding of the fundamental building blocks of American governance – municipalities, townships, villages, and counties. Our mission is to fortify the roots of local control, ensuring that decisions impacting communities remain within the hands of those who know them best.
Berrien Forward acts as a catalyst for collaboration. We bring together leaders from municipalities, townships, and villages, encouraging an exchange of ideas and solutions. By providing a platform for open dialogue, we pave the way for shared initiatives that drive progress and positively impact the lives of residents.
